mmRenowned scholar and rationalist, MM Kalburgi was shot to death on Sunday morning by unidentified assailants. His murder reminds us of the death of anti-superstition activist Narendra Dhabolkar and left ideologue Govind Pansare. Both were gunned down in similar manner by motorcycle-borne shooters.

Kalburgi was one of the voices of reason in Karnataka which irked the fringe elements. His critical writings of various practices and beliefs in Hinduism and his staunch criticism of caste-system and idol-worship had rattled various Hindutva elements in the region. As recent as June 2014, Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Shri Ram Sene launched a state-wide agitation against his controversial comments on the practice of idol-worshiping. Kalburgi had quoted a portion of U Ananthmurthy’s 1996 book, Bettale Puje Yake Kadadu, which tries to explain that worshiping non-living things is futile.

According to Kalburgi’s daughter Roopadarshi, there is a strong possibility that these socio-political outfit are behind the murder of her father. “There was a threat to my father from groups that couldn’t digest his views on caste and communalism. The role of these groups should be probed,” she said. (ALSO READ: Kannada scholar shot dead in Karnataka )

The 77-year-old professor had earlier received life threats for lambasting concepts such as deity-worshiping while speaking at a seminar discussing superstition.

Following the news of his death, the Bajrang Dal co-convener of Mangalore, Bhuvith Shetty threatened rationalist thinker, Prof KS Bhagwan of meeting the same fate if he continues to express his anti-Hindu views.

The organizations linked to Sangh Parivar celebrated the death of U Ananthmurthy who was a sharp critic of religions. The liberal activist had questioned the various concepts adopted in the Sanatan Dharm.

Similar kind of insensitive attitude was articulated by fringe groups following the death of anti-superstition activists, Narendra Dhabolkar and Govind Pansare in Maharashtra. Following the death of Pansare, a right-wing media outlet, Sanatan Prabhat wrote: “For us comrade Pansare was Hindu by birth, but not by his actions. Godless communists like him have tried to break the moral fabric of the nation”.

The murderers of Pansare and Dhabolkar are still at large, which makes many to assume that the government is soft on saffron terrorism.

Despite, India claims to be a progressive and liberal state, the brutal suppression of rationalist brings us closer to backward third world countries like Bangladesh where atheists and scientific bloggers are hacked to death by Islamic goons. The government’s failure to provide a safe environment for speaking one’s mind, and a lack of impulse to hold those breaching our rights, is slowly turning our democratic nation into a theocratic state.
